My name is Del, and I am the owner of groovyglides.com.
I am single with no children and was a Journeyman Welder up in Northern Alberta, Canada. For my entire adult life, I was a heavy drinker. Not to the point where I thought I was an alcoholic, but I don't remember a day where I didn't have at least one drink.
My shift was two weeks in and two weeks out, just north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. For my two weeks off, I loved dabbling on the computer and trying to figure out how to build websites. I really started to enjoy all that techy stuff 😉. It truly was fun for me, and I had been doing that since 2009.
With the recent economic downturn, my life started to change drastically. I have to mention the Fort McMurray forest fires, where my work condo was located (you may have seen it on the news).
Plus floods, COVID, and the heartbreak of losing friends to their own struggles — we all have our reasons, but the speed at which everything happened caused me to fall into a deep depression.
In 2016, my plan was simple: leave this earth peacefully. My goal was not to wake up. I started hitting the bottle extremely hard. I switched from beer to vodka, which ultimately led me to the reason behind this page.
I was drinking a 40-ounce bottle of vodka every day, plus about five or six beers, even after a 12-hour shift at work. These actions destroyed my liver by the time I was 44 years old.
Toward the end of my illness, I could no longer physically work. My feet were so swollen from drinking that I couldn’t even put a shoe on.
I was completely bloated and literally dying. In May of 2021, I woke up, went to the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and I was completely yellow — Homer Simpson yellow.
I called my brother in Calgary, Alberta, and he talked me into going to the hospital. I took a cab there, walked through the doors — and collapsed.
The doctors told my family I had three weeks to live.
Strangely, I felt relief.
In the back of my mind, I was happy. I always set goals and was determined to reach them. I knew the liver waitlist was about four to five years — I figured I didn’t have a chance.
Fast forward a couple of weeks at the Edmonton hospital, and not only did they find one liver — they found two! Sadly, the first was too small.
At this point, I was coming around. I thought maybe — just maybe — I might survive. My family’s hearts broke, but then came the news: they found a second liver, and it was a match!
Unbelievable.
My sister quit her job in Saskatchewan to be with me before and after surgery. My brother, working four days a week in Calgary, drove to Edmonton on every day off to support me.
Once I saw all this love pouring in, I started to feel remorseful, but I didn’t feel like putting up much of a fight.
The transplant was successful — but there were tons of complications. Doctors told my brother I died twice, and their last Hail Mary was a plasma transplant. Miraculously, it worked.
I wasn’t out of the woods yet. When they thought I was strong enough, they transferred me to my hometown, Calgary, where my brother lived.
I was glad my sister could return home to her family, and my brother didn’t have to travel on his days off anymore.
Once back in Calgary, I developed sepsis (for the second time) and fell into another coma. After recovering from that, I got pneumonia. They drained over two liters of fluid from my lungs.
Complication after complication.
I spent 12 months straight in the hospital and three more in rehab learning to walk again because I had lost all my muscle mass.
Groovy Glides officially launched on Jan 1, 2023, because I suffer from extreme neuropathy in my hands and feet.
I do not think I will ever fully recover — the pain has been constant for almost two years — but I haven’t lost hope. I sought help.
I knew I would never physically work again, so I turned to the Internet to see if I could make a living there. Constantly reminded by the pain in my feet, I started researching foot ailments to help others suffering from the same struggles.
I used all my computer skills and decided to work with suppliers overseas to create a beautiful and comfortable line of shoes for women (and men — coming soon).
I designed them specifically with foot issues in mind:
Hammer toes, bunions, neuropathy, plantar fasciitis, and even drop toe.
(Psst... That’s why our toes are slightly pointed upward — trust us, it makes a world of difference. You need to try them!)
I chose overseas suppliers because they are more affordable for startup costs. Some products may come from China, Italy, Kentucky, or Florida, where our cleaning warehouses are located. Know this — the ideas come directly from us.
My goal is to earn enough capital to eventually start a production warehouse right here in Calgary, Alberta.
This business started with a simple $9,000 back paycheck from the government after fighting for disability coverage (we had to apply three times!).
Most of our profit goes to paying DHL to deliver your products quickly when shipped overseas. If you don’t have happy customers, you don’t have any customers — right?
We believe that offering beautiful, unique products that solve real problems will make you feel better about yourself — and that’s what Groovy Glides wants to be about.
If you’re happy with your shoes, please tell your friends — we could definitely use the exposure!
Running ads is expensive. Breaking even, especially when advertising, is a major challenge for any startup — that’s our reality.
I didn’t write this page for sympathy — people asked for transparency about Groovy Glides, and here it is.
Two years ago, I couldn’t take a step. Now, I’m taking the biggest leap of my life — without needing to jump.
It feels absolutely wonderful.
Thank you — you are the ones making this happen.
This page also proves that the human body can overcome incredible tragedy, both mentally and physically. You just need to give it the right ingredients. Never give up. Never give up hope.
Yes, you might think our shoes are a bit pricey at first glance. But we are trying to deliver the absolute best quality at the fastest shipping times for the best possible price.
There will be mistakes along the way — but we promise to correct them. Please bear with us — we are truly trying our best.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly we handle returns and exchanges — way faster than the big guys!
We are an online-only business and will never have a physical store — the overhead is just too high. Otherwise, we’d have to charge $140 USD a pair!
You won’t find a phone number — we don’t have a call center. Instead, email us!
We hire people to help create amazing products and respond to emails — usually within 24 to 48 hours.
If you really want to try a pair of our shoes and can’t afford them, please email us at support@groovyglides.com and ask for Del.
I will personally do my best to help you get a pair.
Even if you have no money and are in pain, reach out — I’ve even devised fun ways to know if you’re lying 😉.
